Kona coffee is one of the rarest, highest-quality, and most delicious varieties of coffee grown anywhere in the world. Only beans grown in the Kona Coffee Belt, a narrow stretch of land on the lush, volcanic slopes of Hawaii’s Big Island, can be called “Kona Coffee”. And yet, most of the coffee labelled “Kona” is actually a cheaper blend containing as little as 10% Kona beans. We source only 100% genuine Kona Typica for Difference Coffee customers. It must be certified for origin and graded by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. Furthermore, we work with only the top award-winning estates in Hawaii.

This year, we chose to work with Hawaiian Queen Coffee, a four-time first-place Crown Competition winner at the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. We collaborated closely with them to obtain the absolute best from the annual harvest – the winning lot of the 2021/22 annual Kona Coffee Cupping Competition. Only 20 bags of this coffee was produced and Difference Coffee secured 6 of them, the rest being exported to Japan or enjoyed at origin.

These exceptional, rare beans represent all the most coveted qualities of the famous variety — rich, smooth, and bold, with notes of dark chocolate and a delicate acidity. They promise a truly spectacular take on the classic coffee flavour profile.

What makes Kona coffee so special?

Kona coffee is highly regarded for its distinctiveness. Grown solely in the Kona region of Hawaii's Big Island, it benefits from volcanic soil, ideal altitude, and favorable climate. Hand-picked and meticulously processed, Kona beans offer a smooth, rich flavor with low acidity. Limited in production, its exclusivity and exceptional taste have elevated it to a highly sought-after and esteemed status among coffee connoisseurs worldwide.

Where can I buy Kona coffee?

While many shops sell Kona coffee, it's important to be cautious as not all provide a superior product. Kona coffee quality varies based on factors like grade, which is determined by bean size, defects, and overall quality. The top grades are "Kona Extra Fancy," "Kona Fancy," "Kona Number 1," and more. Difference Coffee, for instance, sources its beans from one of Kona's esteemed coffee estates, guaranteeing the finest and most flavorful beans Hawaii has to offer. This ensures that you can enjoy the delightful taste of Specialty Grade Kona coffee.

How is Kona coffee made

Kona coffee undergoes a meticulous process to achieve its exceptional quality. Grown in Hawaii's Kona region, the coffee cherries are selectively hand-picked when fully ripe. After harvesting, the cherries are processed to extract the beans. The beans are then fermented, washed, and dried. Once dried, they undergo roasting to unlock their unique flavors and aromas. The result is a highly prized Kona coffee with a rich, smooth taste. From cultivation to roasting, every step is carefully executed to ensure the distinctive and sought-after qualities of Kona coffee are preserved.
