Kona coffee is one of the rarest, highest-quality, and most delicious varieties of coffee grown anywhere in the world. Only beans grown in the Kona Coffee Belt, a narrow stretch of land on the lush, volcanic slopes of Hawaii’s Big Island, can be called “Kona Coffee”. And yet, most of the coffee labelled “Kona” is actually a cheaper blend containing as little as 10% Kona beans. We source only 100% genuine Kona Typica for Difference Coffee customers. It must be certified for origin and graded as Extra-Fancy (the highest possible grade) by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. Furthermore, we work with only the top award-winning estates in Hawaii.
This year, we chose to work with Hawaiian Queen Coffee, a three-time first-place Crown Competition winner at the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. We collaborated closely with them to obtain the absolute best from the annual harvest – 100% Extra-Fancy size Kona Typica beans from just one varietal of tree on the farm. These large size beans are the finest quality as they have had more time to develop and ripen. The uniformity of size means the beans need the same length of time to roast, ensuring consistency of flavour. The lot that met our exacting demands and strict criteria came in at just five bags of 100lbs each. We purchased the entire amount.
