THE ESSENCE

Mark Twain once wrote, “I think the Kona coffee has a richer flavour than any other.” This rare coffee, sourced exclusively from the Kona Coffee Belt in Hawaii, comes directly from the legendary four-time Kona Cupping Competition Champion estate, Hawaiian Queen Coffee. Each bean is certified for origin and graded Extra Fancy — the top Kona grade — by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, capturing Kona Typica's unique flavour profile. Celebrated for its exceptional quality, this coffee has won Grand Gold at the Monde Selection awards three years running, in 2024, 2025 and 2026, solidifying its status as one of the finest offerings available to coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

MEET THE PRODUCER

Established in 2009, Hawaiian Queen Coffee has quickly gained international recognition. Its 160-acre farm sits at 1,800 to 2,000 feet on the western slopes of Hualālai, just above the village of Holualoa in the heart of the Kona Coffee Belt. The estate's commitment to quality is evident in its meticulous hand-picking process, ensuring only the ripest cherries are harvested. This dedication has led to remarkable success at the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival's cupping competition: first place in the Crown Division in 2013, 2014, 2019 and 2021, and a top-three finish in six other years. We buy one grade only from the estate — Extra Fancy, the highest grade the Hawaii Department of Agriculture awards.

THE TERROIR

The Kona Coffee Belt is a strip of farmland about thirty miles long on the western slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa, on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is the only place on earth that can legally call its coffee 100% Kona. Hawaiian Queen Coffee sits in the northern half of the belt, at 1,800 to 2,000 feet above the village of Holualoa, where the mountain does most of the work: mornings are clear and sunny, cloud builds over the slope by early afternoon, and rain follows. The trees get light when they need it and shade when they don't, on young volcanic soil that drains fast and holds minerals. Kona is also unusually far north for a coffee region, so the cherry ripens slowly — the harvest runs from August to February and is hand-picked in several passes, red cherry only. The result is a Kona Typica that is sweet, clean and mild, with the candied-apple brightness this particular slope is known for. We buy one grade from this terroir: Extra Fancy, the largest and cleanest beans the Hawaii Department of Agriculture certifies.
