A Difference Coffee capsule being taken from its box

THE RAKE:

The Rake Asks What Makes Difference Coffee Unique

Christian Barker profiles the founder bringing cigar world discernment to the top 1% of the world's coffee.

The Rake, the magazine of classic men's style, profiled Difference Coffee in April 2018, asking in Christian Barker's headline what makes the company unique.

The answer starts with an unlikely founder: a man from a tobacco family who found coffee bitter and ordered tea instead, until his wife brought a Nespresso machine home. The piece sets out the three differentiators Amir cites, sourcing, roasting and freshness. Only Specialty Grade coffee qualifies, the roughly 1% of world production scoring above 80 points with fewer than five defects per 350 grams of green beans, bought at auction at prices Amir says make Difference Coffee among the highest paying buyers from farmers in developing countries. Roasting is handled monthly by Jonny England, head judge for the World Barista Championship and World Brewers Cup, so no capsule sits long on a shelf. Clients named include Gstaad Palace, Harry's Bar, Mark's Club, Marina Bay Sands and The Wellesley.
