LONDON PACKAGING WEEK:
London Packaging Week Meets Difference Coffee
A founder profile ahead of Amir Gehl's Luxury Stage appearance: sourcing the top 1% of the top 1%, and packaging it like a luxury chocolate box.
London Packaging Week profiled founder Amir Gehl in June 2024, ahead of his appearance on the event's Luxury Stage, in a piece opening on the conviction that "Most coffee lovers have never tasted the world's best coffees".
The profile tells the founding story, from tea drinker with a Nespresso machine to a trip to Harrods for Kona Extra Fancy at £200 a kilo, packed into an empty capsule, and sets out the sourcing that followed: of the roughly 1% of world coffee that grades as specialty, Difference Coffee focuses on the top 1% of that 1%, bidding at the auctions behind Best of Panama, the Cup of Excellence and the Kona Cupping Competition, paying as much as $10,000 a kilo for a single coffee. Amir, who sits on the board of the Alliance for Coffee Excellence, argues that paying farmers the most is the most sustainable approach, alongside the company's work with Earthly on carbon removal and its Podback aluminium recycling.
As a packaging publication, it also digs into the boxes: inspired by fashion and perfume houses rather than the plain paper bags of specialty coffee, presented like a luxury chocolate box and finished in Wibalin Buckram paper, a material long associated with luxury shops. The profile was also picked up by Converter Magazine, the trade title for the converting and packaging industry.
