Amir Gehl of Difference Coffee

THE GENTLEMAN'S JOURNAL:

The Gentleman's Journal's Six Minute Mentor

Zoe Dickens asks Amir Gehl what building a luxury coffee company actually takes.

The Gentleman's Journal featured Amir Gehl in its Six Minute Mentor series, in which Zoe Dickens asks founders what building their business actually took.

The answers are candid. The company began, he admits, in "pure hedonism": he wanted to drink high quality coffee and nobody sold it in capsules, and Difference Coffee became the first UK company to sell award winning specialty coffee in machine compatible capsules direct to consumers. He describes the unglamorous parts, 80 hour weeks away from home, supplier contracts that stop restaurants switching, buyers who put cost before quality, and the principles that carried him through: make more good decisions than bad ones, do what you love, and go the extra mile for clients. At the time of the interview the coffee was served at The Dorchester, Annabel's and 48 Michelin starred restaurants, including Alain Passard's Arpège, Guy Savoy and Sat Bains.
