AUCTION NEWS:
A Record at Ethiopia's First Cup of Excellence
The coffee trade press names Difference Coffee among the buyers of the record $185.10 per pound Ethiopian champion.
When Ethiopia, the birthplace of arabica, held its first ever Cup of Excellence competition in 2020, the auction made history: as Daily Coffee News reported, the 28 winning lots generated a record $1.34 million, averaging $28 per pound.
The top scoring lot, a natural process coffee from Sidama, sold for $185.10 per pound, the highest price ever recorded for an Ethiopian coffee according to the Alliance for Coffee Excellence. BeanScene, the Australian coffee trade magazine, named Difference Coffee among the buying group led by Japan's Maruyama Coffee, alongside Saza Coffee, Cometeer, Goodboybob and Harrods, that secured half of the champion lot.
That coffee went on to make headlines of its own, served at Queens of Mayfair as the most expensive cup in the United Kingdom and covered by CNN and Forbes.
