The Nth Degree Club Meets Amir Gehl
Founder Amir Gehl, who hails from a long line of tobacco manufacturers, compares his passion for coffee to his appreciation of fine wines and cigars.
The Nth Degree Club profiled member Amir Gehl and the story of Difference Coffee, from a founder who hails from a long line of tobacco manufacturers and compares his passion for coffee to his appreciation of fine wines and cigars.
The piece describes the aim, to create the ultimate terroir led coffee collection, and the line up it produced: Jamaican Blue Mountain, Hawaiian Kona, Panamanian Geisha and Indonesian Kopi Luwak. It sets out the sourcing discipline, only the highest rated specialty grade Arabica, bought direct from producers who achieve the highest scores in competitions such as Cup of Excellence, Best of Panama and the Kona Cupping Competition, and illustrates the scrutiny involved: at Cup of Excellence, the annual Oscars of the coffee world, 300 entries go through six rounds of evaluation, 9,020 cups are analysed, and each of the ten finalists is cupped at least 280 times. Roasting is entrusted to master roaster Jonny England, head judge for the World Barista Championship and World Brewers Cup.
