The Cup of Excellence is one of the coffee world's most prestigious competitions.

EVERY COFFEE TELLS A STORY

The Cup of Excellence (CoE) is one of the coffee world's most prestigious competitions. Organised by the Alliance for Coffee Excellence, the Cup of Excellence is known for its rigorous levels of scrutiny. Cupping evaluations overseen by industry experts take place over three weeks. A national jury evaluates entrants first, followed by an international jury made up of experts from all over the world.

El Salvador hosted its first Cup of Excellence in 2003 and has continued to showcase the very best of the nation’s coffee every year since. In 2020, judges worked remotely from offices all around the globe to evaluate the leading 30 lots – those that qualified for the international level with scores over 87. The top scorer for 2020 was La Divina Providencia, whose winning lot was awarded an outstanding 90.31 points.

La Divina Providencia is a family-run estate owned by Roberto Ulloa, a fifth-generation coffee producer and agronomist. The estate lies in the Palo de Campana microregion of El Salvador, where periodic ash deposits from the nearby Izalco and Santa Ana volcanoes have made the sandy loam soils extremely rich and fertile. At around 1,600 to 1,700 metres above sea level, the estate has an ideal climate and terroir for growing exceptional coffees. It also has a long heritage, with the first coffee crop planted on the property in 1875. Roberto Ulloa bought and started restoring the largely abandoned plantation around 2000, reviving century-old trees and planting Red, Orange and Kenya Bourbon varietals along with top-scoring Pacamara. As a result, La Divina Providencia has surpassed its former glory with numerous top-five finishes at the Cup of Excellence in addition to 2020’s win.

The Cup of Excellence-winning lot from La Divina Providencia is fruit-forward, complex, sweet and well-balanced. Difference Coffee is excited for you to taste the best coffee from all of El Salvador and get to know a true rising star in the world of speciality coffee.
