TEMPUS MAGAZINE:

Tempus on a New Blend of Luxury in London

Tempus editor Michelle Johnson meets Amir Gehl to talk fine wine parallels, competition sourcing and the London venues serving the coffee.

Tempus, the luxury lifestyle magazine, interviewed founder Amir Gehl in January 2019 on how Difference Coffee was introducing a new blend of luxury to London, with the coffee already served at venues including Ten Trinity Square and Annabel's.

In conversation with Michelle Johnson, Amir frames great coffee the way the wine world frames its finest bottles: everything is 100% Arabica, single varietal and single estate, nothing blended, graded on the Specialty Coffee Association's 100 point scale on which only around 1% of the world's supply qualifies as specialty. He explains the buying method, auctions attached to the Kona Cupping Competition, Best of Panama and the Cup of Excellence, where he says Difference Coffee pays more than other buyers, and the industry saying that guides it all: "if it didn't happen in the field, it won't happen in your cup". Roasting sits with Jonny England, one of only four qualified Q Graders in Europe and an acting head judge for the World Barista Championship and World Brewers Cup.
