Caffeine Magazine on the Capsule Collection

Caffeine Magazine's issue 50 cover story on speciality pods names Difference Coffee among the pioneers and asks Amir Gehl why he chose capsules.

Issue 50 of Caffeine, the UK magazine for independent and speciality coffee, asked on its cover whether we have reached "peak pod". Inside, Phil Wain's four-page feature, Capsule Collection, traced how speciality coffee came to terms with the capsule.

The piece describes Difference Coffee and Colonna Coffee as pioneers who saw coffee capsules as a way to bring some of the world's best coffee to a wider range of customers, and notes that we were, and still are, selling elite coffees including La Esmeralda Geisha micro-lots and Cup of Excellence winners.

Asked why he chose to focus on pods, Amir explained that he simply wanted better coffee. He bought Kona at Harrods and made a capsule with it at home by hand, and it tasted much better: "That's when the idea for Difference started". Looking ahead, he told the magazine that "Pods are here to stay", and that the conversation now is about making them more sustainable rather than less convenient.
