Kona coffee is one of the rarest, highest-quality, and most delicious varieties of coffee grown anywhere in the world. Only beans grown in the Kona Coffee Belt, a narrow stretch of land on the lush, volcanic slopes of Hawaii’s Big Island, can be called “Kona Coffee.” And yet, most of the coffee labelled “Kona” is actually a cheaper blend containing as little as 10% Kona beans. For Difference Coffee customers, we source only 100% genuine Kona Typica. It must be certified for origin and graded as Extra-Fancy (the highest possible grade) by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. Furthermore, we work with only the top award-winning estates in Hawaii.

This year, we chose to work with Hawaiian Queen Coffee, a three-time first-place Crown Competition winner at the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. We worked closely with Hawaiian Queen Coffee to source the absolute best lot of beans from its annual harvest. The lot that met our strict criteria for only 100% Extra-Fancy size Kona Typica beans came in at just five bags of 100 pounds each. We purchased the entire lot. These exceptional, rare beans represent all the most coveted qualities of the famous variety — rich, smooth, and bold, with notes of dark chocolate and a delicate acidity. They promise a truly spectacular take on the classic coffee flavour profile.

Hawaiian Queen Coffee grows 100% Kona coffee beans on the slopes of Hualalai, one of five volcanoes that make up the Big Island of Hawaii.

EVERY COFFEE TELLS A STORY

Its location in the heart of the Kona Coffee Belt is known as Wai’ono Meadows, a name that in the Hawaiian language means “delicious water.” The estate takes great pride in its sustainable practices and stringent quality control standards, as well as its many top awards at the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. It has won first place in the Crown Competition three times since 2011 and placed in the Top 3 for seven out of the past nine events.

Hawaiian Queen Coffee submits all of its annual crop to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture to be independently certified for origin and grade. This practice assures customers that its products are genuine and of the highest quality. Also of note, the farm is a nonprofit operation that donates all of its proceeds to the Pacific Rim Education Foundation.
